Best Farrier App for Solo Shoers: A Field Test

The best farrier app for a solo shoer is the one that handles their actual working day, device, and recordkeeping needs at an acceptable cost. A feature list is a starting point; a repeatable test is a better basis for choosing.

About this guide: this is a buying checklist from Hoofy, a farrier app publisher. It is not an independent ranking, a customer survey, or a claim that one product is best for everyone.

Choose your must-haves before downloading

Write down your device, country, currency, language, expected horse and client counts, and whether another person needs access. Then identify tasks you cannot compromise on. For example, being able to recover your records may matter more than a visual dashboard.

If you need an Android app, live team access, automatic messaging, or a particular accounting integration, verify those requirements directly with each provider. Do not infer them from words such as “all-in-one” or “cloud-ready.”

Run the same small test in each app

Use fictional client data while comparing products. A useful test set is one barn, three horses, two payers, one completed visit, one rescheduled horse, and one partial payment.

  1. Create the records. Can you distinguish the barn contact from the payer and keep two horses with similar names separate?
  2. Book the work. Can you see the number of horses, address, and timing without opening several unrelated screens?
  3. Change the day. Move one horse and check that the original booking does not remain active by accident.
  4. Prepare a bill. Check line items, invoice delivery, and how a partial payment affects the open balance.
  5. Find the history. Retrieve a dated service note or photo for the correct horse.
  6. Test connectivity. With sample records, see what remains available without a connection and what requires the internet.
  7. Try recovery and export. Find the backup instructions, create an export, and inspect its contents. Do not reset your only device as a test.

Record what happened, not just how it looked

For each task, write “works for me,” “needs a workaround,” or “does not meet my requirement,” with one sentence explaining why. A screenshot of an attractive calendar cannot answer whether your split-payer example works.

Fictional decision example: a farrier who works alone on an iPhone may accept manual client messages if schedule changes and records are easy to manage. A two-person business needing simultaneous updates may reach a different decision. Neither outcome means the other person's choice is wrong.

Check the cost and the exit before committing

Read current subscription terms, trial eligibility, renewal pricing, limits, and cancellation instructions. Check what happens to access and exports when a subscription ends. Keep a backup of existing records until you have verified the new system.

Hoofy is available for iPhone and iPad, with local business records and optional iCloud auto-backup and sync files. Restoring a sync-file snapshot is different from a live shared team workspace. Review Hoofy's current App Store listing and use the comparison checklist to assess your requirements.

If your current spreadsheet still meets your needs, the app-versus-spreadsheet guide can help you decide whether a change is worthwhile.
